This half-term, our pupils have been learning about WWII in History. We began by securing a base knowledge of WWI and how the end of WWI was a contributing factor for the beginning of WWII. We moved on to totalitarianism and how Adolf Hitler, as a leader, was favoured by the majority of Germans at that time. After this, we looked at the German tactic of Blitzkrieg and how speed and surprise led to the successful expansion of Germany into Poland, France and mainland Europe. All of this information gave our pupils a base understanding of the Germans during WWII before going to the RAF museum to learn about the Battle of Britain.
At the museum, the pupils had the opportunity to complete a workshop with one of the RAF historians where the pupils learnt about the RAF’s key role in the Battle of Britain against the Luftwaffe. They then did a role play of some of the key heroes of the RAF, reliving their contributions to the war effort, alongside acting out all the roles that the RAF had as opposed to only thinking of the pilots. Our pupils then had the opportunity to walk around the museum and marvel at the incredible planes that were used during this period – Supermarine Spitfire I, Messerschmitt bf 109 & even the Avro Lancaster Bomber.
