Today we learned about a very special and historic event. King Charles has become the first head of the Church of England to pray publicly with the Pope, who is the leader of the Catholic Church. This was an important moment because it showed Christian unity – two different churches coming together to pray for peace and the common good.
In Year 4, we reflected on this event, focusing on the similarities and differences between the Catholic Church and the Church of England, and explaining how shared beliefs unite us. First, we talked about what happened when the Pope and King Charles met, and why it was such a special occasion to encourage peace for the common good. Then we thought about what both churches believe. We discovered that both Christians share many of the same beliefs; such as believing in God, Jesus, the Bible, and the importance of prayer and kindness. Next, the children completed venn diagrams, showing the things that are the same and different between the Catholic Church and the Church of England. For example, we noticed that the Catholic Church is led by the Pope, while the Church of England is led by the King and the Archbishop of Canterbury.
We finished by reflecting on how even though there are some differences, our shared faith brings us together. We learned that praying together for peace shows love, respect and unity between Christians all around the world. The children were inspired to work with people from all different religions to make our world a better place.
