This week Nursery had tremendous fun encountering their first traditional tale of the year: ‘The Three Billy Goats Gruff’, We loved retelling it; using puppets, props, blocks and instruments to accompany the different parts of the story.
We explored texture when making goats, and our classrooms have been filled with a multitude of spectacular trolls created out of playdough, collage, and ‘splodge’ painting. There were even trolls to work with on the funky fingers table!
On Wednesday we came back to class to find a huge mess! A letter from the troll explained that the goats had destroyed his bridge. He asked us to make him a new one, and we thought about what materials would or wouldn’t make a strong bridge and why. We had a go at testing some out, and made some great ones out of materials such as stickle bricks, Duplo, blocks, lolly sticks and junk modelling.
We helped the goats to make marks with chalks, pens, in shaving foam and with streamers. We also thought about the feelings of the troll and decided to help him by designing a ‘troll soup’ – as he was still hungry! We used our mark-making skills to draw the items we wanted to add, and made shopping lists of the things we need to buy.
We acted out the story both inside and out – small scale and large scale. We set up a river and a bridge near the treehouse, and experimented with moving in different ways across the bridge.
