On Monday, Year 3 visited the London Transport Museum.
It was a perfect opportunity to combine our Topic of Transport with our Science topic of Forces.
We were welcomed by Professor Danielle engaged the children fro the very start.
As we entered the imaginary time machine, we begun thinking about the modes of transport used in London hundreds of years ago and the problems that faced the engineers of the time.
The children looked at pictures of London Bridge and had to identify the transport used in the past. A horse and carriage were the most common and the children were quickly able to identify why there would have been a problem with this. Too many horses means too much horse poo…a smelly problem for the Londoners!
As time moved on, we were introduced to the tram. During the workshop children could see the force needed to pull a tram first hand as Tommy and Emmanuel demonstrated how much easier it was to pull on tracks rather than on cobbled stones. Lots of our budding scientists were confident in giving reasons for this; “It’s because of the friction!”
Once the workshop was over, the children had the opportunity to explore the museum and learn about the history of transport in London.
A fun day was had by all!
