It’s been another brilliant week of learning at home and at school for our Reception children, who have made a great start to the new half term.
We have now begun learning our Phase 3 sounds in Phonics, with our children doing a fantastic job of segmenting and spelling their own words independently. This week, the children have learned the new sounds j and v, wobbling jelly and going for a hunt for kitchen items such as jam and juice to remember their j sound, and making their own vets’ surgeries to apply v… where, strangely, every animal’s name started with V! We also thought about jobs we would like to do when we are older, using our new tricky word ‘be’ to write ‘I will be…’ sentences.
In Maths, we have been combining 2 groups of numbers to find out how many there are altogether. We have played lots of different fun games to practice this skill, including rolling 2 dice and adding them together to move the appropriate number of spaces on a board! We also practiced using our tens frames to find a total number of objects, seeing if we could have a go at spotting how many objects were on it without counting them!
In both our Physical Development learning and our topic learning, we have been really enjoying learning all about Chinese New Year. In our Physical Development learning, we have written our own Chinese characters, talking about how these often resemble their meaning- e.g. the character for ‘mouth’ is rectangular like a mouth. We have also practiced balancing objects on our heads like the ox in the story, and using chopsticks to pick up small items! We have learned all about how Chinese people celebrate this important event, and finished the week by making our own beautiful Chinese lanterns.
Our children also completed some wonderful home learning over the break to mark the year of St Joseph. They were able to complete this learning in whatever form they chose, and we saw some lovely creative ideas including collages, sculptures, drawings and more!
We hope you all have a lovely, restful weekend and look forward to another week of fantastic learning ahead.
