This week, our pupils channelled their Parliamentary spirit and debated our current topic in Religion. For context, the pupils have been studying the book of Genesis this half-term, focusing on Creation & covenant. We discussed at length the second creation story of Adam & Eve in the Garden of Eden, unpicking the meaning of stewardship and ownership of our environment that God commanded Adam to do. We discussed the seemingly contradictory stance that Adam and Eve were the first humans on earth vs. the Big Bang theory (not the show…). We came to the conclusion that Religion and Science go hand-in-hand, with Science delivering irrefutable evidence of existence and evolution and how the teachings of the second creation (stewardship of the earth) has never been more important. We even discussed how the idea of the Big Bang theory first appeared in 1931, in a paper by Georges Lemaître, a Belgian cosmologist and Catholic priest. We finished this discussion with a debate, where one side of the room argued the importance of Science in creation, and the opposition argued the importance of the creation story in the Bible. It concluded with both sides appreciating the importance of each others points and agreeing to work together moving forward.
