Year 5 were very lucky to be visited by the Three Discovery team who ran a workshop on creating and editing videos on the iPad with the app iMovie. Students worked in groups to create an educational video about the Anglo-Saxons which is the topic of our History unit this term. Some groups focused on the Sutton Hoo archaeological site, where they came from, ferocious fight scenes and reasons for invading Britain.
This week, students have been developing an argument for a debate. They had to argue whether smartphones should be allowed for children under 13 years old or if smartphones should be banned for children under 13 years old. Interestingly, we had an evenly-sided debate. Students researched the positive and negative impact of smartphone usage on children. Then they worked collaboratively in pairs to decide on a preferred view and developed reasons to justify their argument.
During English lessons, we are developing students’ oracy skills by providing opportunities for them to present their work to the class and by working collaboratively with others to share their ideas. As part of our current affair topic, students presented their argument to the class on smartphones and debated whether they should be allowed or banned for children under 13 years old.
