During our History lesson this week, the students learnt about the Staffordshire Hoard and researched some of the individual artefacts that were discovered by archaeologist. Students learnt that the Staffordshire Hoard is the largest collection of Anglo-Saxon gold and silver metalwork ever found, comprising over 4,000 items. Archaeologists believe the Hoard was buried during the 7th Century, at a time when the region was part of the Kingdom of Mercia. For a bit of fun, students dressed up as Anglo-Saxon warriors and had their picture taken.
Year 5 students were very fortunate to participate in a live stream workshop with an instructor from the Institute of Imagination. The students used laptops to access the Scratch website and complete coding tasks. Unsurprisingly, there were many students who were already experts in using Scratch. The activity involved coding for our emotions. Students were asked to use the coding software to create a calming environment and an avatar that matched how they were feeling. Students could then use code to manipulate their avatar and make it move.
Throughout the term, students have been learning about fake news. We have explored what it is, why it is harmful and how we can avoid it. The students researched a chosen topic on fake news and then worked collaboratively with their group to create a poster and present their ideas to the class. To celebrate our learning, the Year 5 cohort has created a board display that showcases their work and share their ideas with the rest of the school.
