This week Year 5 have been talking all about time! And why is that you ask? Well, this week has been British Science Week and the theme has been ‘Time’. In Year 5 we have talked about what time means to us and what we think it is. This isn’t an easy question to answer but it created a rich and interesting discussion! However, Albert Einstein put it in a way that we all agreed on, ‘Life is like riding a bicycle – in order to keep your balance, you must keep moving.’
In their Science lesson Year 5 created a pendulum. They learned that in its simplest form, a pendulum is a weight that hangs from the end of a wire or a string. One end of the wire is attached to a fixed point. The weight, called the bob, hangs at the other end. If a person pulls the bob back and lets it go, the pendulum swings freely. In pairs, the class then decided what question they wanted to answer in their investigation. Did they want to see if the length of their string would impact the amount of times their pendulum would swing? Would adding air resistance using card slow their pendulum down? They worked excellently in their pairs and it was wonderful to see!
Furthermore, Year 5 have been fortunate enough to see a performance of Cinderella in school, performed by level 4 students studying for a professional diploma, in Performance at City & Islington College. The students not only acted, danced and sang in the performance but they had written and directed the play themselves! Year 5 were able to ask them questions after the performance and it was great to see them all so inspired.
