This week Year 5 have been learning about some of the local Highgate history. On Monday we visited Highgate Cemetery and had a chance to visit the graves of some famous historical figures. These figures included – William Friese-Greene, Karl Marx and George Eliot. Throughout the week the children have been researching the figures and taking part in a number of exciting activities. These included – research, debates, painting and writing biographies.
On Tuesday the children spent the afternoon researching Karl Marx and finding about who he was. We then looked at the political terms – capitalism, socialism and communism. The children learnt a bit about the different political systems and then had a debate – capitalism vs communism. It was very high level and we were so impressed with how well the children articulated their opinions.
The children also researched George Eliot and found out that George Eliot’s real name was Mary Anne Evans. On World Book Day the children had a chance to write their own short story in the style of George Eliot as well as writing a George Eliot biography. The children looked amazing in their fantastic historical figure costumes.
