This week in Year 4, we celebrated the 4th of July as part of our Geography topic; The Americas. It was a brilliant day filled with games, sports and fun!
We began the day with a treat from Mrs Roberts; ‘Jelly Bellys’! The children had their own Jelly bean and were asked to guess the flavour. Luckily, they were the tasty ones rather than ‘Bertie Bott’s Every Flavour Beans’. Mrs Roberts told us that the previous American president Ronald Regan had loved this treat and had a special jar to offer to his White House guests.
Next, the children learnt about the history of American Independence Day, researching how the Declaration of Independence first came about and the range of ways American people celebrate this day. The children then used this research to create their own Kahoot quizzes about the celebration.
After that, we decided to decorate our playground with American and 4th July themed images. The children used outdoor chalk to display their designs. The playground was filled with red, white and blue – a perfect picture for our day.
In the afternoon, we went outside to try an active American game; ‘Capture the flag’. We held a tournament and the competition was tough.
Then, we were lucky to receive a visit from Mrs Roberts who shared some of her trinkets and stories from her childhood in the USA. For example, she showed the children her special doll of Betsy Ross, who designed the early version of the flag of the United States. She was very pleased to join in with our celebrations.
To end the day, the children enjoyed some traditional American treats of hot dogs and s’mores. They were delicious!
This was definitely a day to remember and a great way for the children to enhance their learning about The Americas.
