We’re excited to share that our Year 4 pupils have been studying the vibrant and unique world of Ndebele art, focusing on the work of renowned South African artist, Esther Mahlangu. This traditional African art, predominantly practiced by Ndebele women, is known for its bold geometric patterns and vivid colours, originally used to decorate the exterior walls of Ndebele homes.
The children have not only learned about the cultural significance of these patterns and colours, but they also had the opportunity to create their own Ndebele-inspired self-portraits. Using the distinctive geometric designs and bright palettes, they expressed their individuality while honouring the rich artistic traditions of the Ndebele people.
Esther Mahlangu, a key figure in preserving and promoting this style globally, has inspired our pupils to see how traditional art can evolve while staying true to its roots.
We encourage you to continue supporting your child’s creativity by discussing what they’ve learned and perhaps exploring more about African art and culture together.
