Earlier in the week, on Wednesday, our Year 4 pupils had a fantastic trip to Highgate Cemetery, exploring both the West and East sections. It was a day filled with history, nature, and the children were thoroughly engaged throughout. Our visit began with a guided tour of the West Cemetery, famous for its impressive Victorian architecture and notable historical figures. The children were fascinated by the stories of individuals such as George Michael and Michael Faraday, learning about their legacies and impact.
One of the highlights was exploring the Egyptian Avenue and the Circle of Lebanon, which felt like stepping back in time. The children were especially intrigued by the catacombs, where they learned how the Victorians used underground chambers for burials. The eerie but fascinating atmosphere of the catacombs sparked plenty of curiosity and questions!
After the West Cemetery, we crossed over to the East Cemetery for a self-guided tour. The children navigated the area and located the graves of famous figures, such as Karl Marx and George Eliot, as well as a memorial to the London Fire Brigade. The East Cemetery offered not only historical exploration but also a chance to appreciate the peaceful surroundings. The trip brought to life our lessons on Victorian Britain and local history and pupils came back buzzing with questions and new knowledge that we’ll continue to explore in class.
Finally, we’d like to thank the staff at Highgate Cemetery for their informative tour as well as our parent volunteers for assisting on the trip!
