This week in English lessons, our Year 4 pupils dove into the fascinating world of information texts! Their journey began with an example all about badgers, where they learned to spot the key features that make up this style of writing. Using a colour-coded key, they highlighted and identified these features, such as headings, subheadings, bullet points and diagrams. This activity not only sharpened their understanding of how information texts are structured but also made for a fun and interactive lesson!
As the week progressed, the children turned their attention to researching facts. They explored how to gather information from reliable sources, including books from our school library and trusted websites. We emphasised the importance of using educational or scientific sources, helping them develop critical thinking skills when choosing where to find information.
Armed with these skills, the children worked independently to gather fascinating facts about a range of Arctic animals, such as polar bears, puffins, walruses, Arctic hares, harp seals and snowy owls. Next week, each child will choose one Arctic animal and use what they’ve learned to create their own information text. This will involve applying their knowledge of key features, organising their facts clearly, and presenting their work creatively. We can’t wait to see their finished pieces!
