It’s been a fun-filled week of learning in Year 2 with not one, but two exciting visitors! On Friday morning, Milo’s mum came in to talk to us about her job working in a lab. The children are currently learning about scientists and inventors in their Science topic so it was wonderful to hear some stories and interesting facts from a real scientist. The pupils listened with great curiosity and were keen ask many questions. Some of their questions were: ‘Do you work with DNA?’, ‘Do you ever make mistakes and have to start again?’ and ‘Do you use computers with science?’. Milo’s mum explained that there are many different types of Science such as Computer Science, Biology, Chemistry and Physics. She told the children that she works in Biology performing tests and she even showed the children some of the equipment she uses on a daily basis. A few children were able to use a pipette to measure very small amounts of liquid, just like Milo’s mum does at work! They loved the talk and we greatly appreciate your time!
We were also very lucky to receive a visit from British Olympian, Montell Douglas. Incredibly, she was the first British woman selected to compete in different sports at both the Summer and Winter Olympic Games. She broke the British record for the women’s 100m sprint, with a time of 11.05 seconds! After that, she explained that she went on to join Team GB women’s bobsleigh team. Montell told us all about her achievements throughout her career and has without doubt inspired the children to reach for the stars and be active! She also answered some of the children’s questions about how she trains and the injuries she sometimes obtains whilst bobsleighing as it can be quite bumpy and rough. Amazingly, she showed us her shiny, Olympic gold medal! Later in the afternoon, the children had an opportunity to compete in some circuits, with Montell encouraging and cheering them on. They were pretty exhausted afterwards!
