In Music this week, Year 2 continued their musical journey into the world of Samba. Samba is a lively and energetic style of music from Brazil, known for its rhythms and vibrant beats. It is deeply connected to the culture of Brazil, especially the city of Rio de Janeiro, where Carnival takes place each year, and Samba music features heavily. The music is all about rhythm and energy, with drums and percussion instruments at its heart.
Year 2 has learned about the different instruments used in Samba music, such as the surdo, tamborim, agogo, and caixa. They did very well in their quiz about the instruments, remembering the names of the different drums and percussion instruments.
Following this, the class put their knowledge to the test by clapping along to different Samba rhythms. After practicing clapping some of the rhythms, Year 2 split into two groups. They worked together to clap a simple polyrhythm, which is when two different rhythms happen at the same time. It was amazing to see how well the groups worked together, and they played the polyrhythm like true Samba musicians!
Next, Year 2 went to the outdoor area to create their own Samba pieces, inspired by the nature surrounding them. It was wonderful to watch their creative ideas as they composed their own Samba rhythms. They finished the lesson with a song circle, putting their newfound Samba rhythm knowledge to good use as they sang and played rhythms along with the guitar, seeing how they could incorporate the fabulous Samba rhythms they had learned and created into some of their own favourite songs.
Also this week, Year 2 visited the church to celebrate St Joseph’s Feast Day. The children sang lovely songs and enjoyed listening to stories about St Joseph. They learned how he was caring and a great helper. Everyone had a wonderful time celebrating together!
