This week, Year 2 have been diving into their new book, The Night Gardener, and it has really sparked their imagination! Before we began reading, the children ‘found’ clues hidden around the classroom – objects that might belong to the characters in the story. These clues helped them make predictions and imagine who the characters might be, what their lives are like, and how they might be feeling. This activity encouraged the children to think deeply and use inference skills before meeting the characters in the book.

We then imagined what it would be like to live on Grimloch Street, describing how people there might have felt before the Night Gardener’s mysterious arrival. The children used rich vocabulary and thoughtful ideas to bring the setting and emotions to life.

In Maths, we tackled the tricky concept of adding across a ten. The children showed brilliant perseverance, using manipulatives to help them understand how numbers bridge over ten. It was wonderful to see everyone supporting each other and celebrating those “lightbulb moments” as the lesson progressed.

We are so proud of how hard Year 2 are working, showing curiosity in their reading and determination in their maths. What a fantastic week of learning!
