Having used manipulatives to explore fractions last week, the Year 2 children have now moved on to calculating fractions of amounts by drawing diagrams in their books. The children started off the week by looking at halves of various amounts. The next day, they moved onto finding a quarter of different numbers. In the following lesson, the children were challenged to find half and a quarter of the same number simultaneously. This fed into the next lesson which was quite tricky… three quarters! However, the children worked incredibly hard and used their neatly presented diagrams to help them write fraction sentences. Finally, to end the week, the children learned the meaning of the word ‘equivalent’. They now know that this means ‘the same as’. They applied this knowledge to demonstrate how one half and two quarters of the an amount are the same. Well done!
