Another busy week here in Year 2!
This week, Year 2 have been working hard in their Oracy and Current Affairs lesson. They have learnt all about the volcanic eruptions in the Iceland town Grindavik that occurred on 14th January 2024 this year. Today they worked in groups to present their own news report! We all think they did brilliantly!
Furthermore, we have been learning what a sacrament is in our Religion lessons. Year 2 know that the word ‘sacrament’ means ‘something hidden which comes from God’. They learnt that Catholics believe that we share in God’s love during the sacraments and that they are invisible gifts of God’s love are given to us through the Holy Spirit.
This week Year 2 learnt about the first sacrament which is Baptism. In one of our lessons they created a baptism scene. They learned that ‘Baptism’ is the word used by most Catholics for the service in which people join the church. Parents promise to bring the child up as a good Christian, this is why some people call it a Christening. In the Catholic Church, there are seven sacraments; the word ‘sacrament’ means ‘something hidden which comes from God’. Baptism is the first sacrament. The children acted out how:
- The priest, parents and godparents gather around the baptismal font.
- The priest uses holy water to make the sign of the cross on the baby’s forehead and says “I baptise you in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.”
- A lighted candle is given to the parents or godparents. Priests say “This is to show you have passed from darkness to light. Shine as a light in the world.”
Congratulations to Florence in Citrine class, her family, and her grandad who received an MBE for services to Economic and Community Development in Cardiff this week!
