In year 1 we have been learning about the Black History artist Winston Branch. We learned that he is a British artist who originally came from Saint Lucia and that his parents sent him to London when he was 12 because he was so good at art and they wanted him to go to a good art school.
We looked at some of his paintings and we described them as ‘messy’. We talked about how his paintings were abstract which means that the picture is not always clear. The children discussed how it looks like paint has been “splattered and splodged” in most of Branch’s work.
Amber and Orange Class were inspired to create their own paintings in the style of Winston Branch. Have a look below at all of our amazing Black History Month Art.
We have also been learning about Black History real life super heroes. We heard the story of Martin Luther King and Rosa Parks and how their actions led to big changes in America for equality. We all agreed that they definitely deserve a superhero badge for their amazing work!
