On Thursday, year 4 visited Tate Britain on an artistic journey of self-discovery ‘to find themselves’ – quite literally on the gallery walls. Despite being amongst over 76, 000 faces of fellow year 3 pupils, our children quickly found themselves (albeit in spite of a bit of neck ache!) high on the gallery walls! This vast artwork commissioned by Oscar winning film director, Steve McQueen has been hailed as one of the most ambitious visual portraits of citizenship ever undertaken. The children were encouraged to reflect on how themselves and other children, from a range of backgrounds, will one day shape the future of our city. Which of the faces will become our next influential fashion designer, film star, footballer, lawyer, politician….
After a chance to see our two class photos in closer detail on a large screen, the children explored the other Tate galleries. They were fascinated to see the vast array of artwork from paintings, collage, fabric design and sculpture. We ended the day, with a walk along the River Thames, spotting London’s famous landmarks.
