Year 5 have had a fantastically busy final week of the half term!
In their History lesson the children have been exploring which city and town names in Britain originated from Viking words. Did you know that the name ‘Sheffield’ means ‘field by the River Sheaf’ and Scarborough means ‘the strong hold of Skarthi’? The children used chrome books to help them research and atlases to find the names of different places in Britain. Some of the children even pointed out that ‘Highgate’ could have originated from a Viking name!
The children have also been creating their own Viking portraits in their Art lessons and have been considering the different features of a Viking person!
In their Science lesson the children have been exploring time zones of different countries around the world. We spoke about the reasons as to why there is day and night and why it is day and night in different countries around the world at different times. We have found out lots of really interesting information. Did you know that when it is 12pm in the UK it is 5pm in Nepal and India? Or that Russia has more time zones than any other country in the world? A whole 11 time zones!
We are so proud of all of the hard work that the children have been doing this half term and we wish you all a very restful half term!
