It has been another busy but brilliant week in Reception, with all our children and staff excited to be back at school after the Easter break! In Phonics, we have continued learning new Phase 3 sounds, with the children being taught the th and ng phonemes and a new tricky word, all. We have enjoyed making our own rings to practice our ng sound and writing our own weather forecasts to practice using th in the word ‘think!’
In Maths, we have been focusing on 3D shapes, learning to name and describe cubes, cuboids, spheres, pyramids and cylinders. We have identified these shapes across a variety of household objects such as Pringles tubes, ice cream cones and tissue boxes, and have secured our knowledge of them by stamping them into playdough, sorting them by the shape of their faces and using them to build amazing structures in our construction area!
To explore our current topic of ‘Down on the Farm’, we have read & enjoyed ‘Handa’s Hen’, making some wonderful story maps to retell the story and discussing the differences between farms in the UK and Africa, including thinking about which foods might grow where. The children came up with some fantastic ideas and observations, including wondering how crops that grow in hotter countries like coconuts, rice and bananas can travel all the way to London so fast!
