Reception have thoroughly enjoyed another week full of Space themed fun. This week, the children have focussed their attention on learning all about our incredible Solar System and the planets within it.
Our word of the week was ‘non-fiction’ and the children learnt that non-fiction texts tell us information about something. In their activities they then used their Phonics skills to read information about the Solar System and wrote facts about the planets.
Reception also researched information about astronauts and found out about their experiences when their exploring in space. The children learnt that the food they eat must be freeze-dried so that it can be preserved for the long periods of time that astronauts are away for. The children enjoyed tasting astronaut space food. They sampled freeze-dried strawberries and apples with cinnamon. There were certainly some mixed reactions and reviews!
The highlight of Reception’s week came on Thursday when we had a visit from the Wonderdome – a planetarium space show. As Reception lay back looking up at the ceiling of the dome, the show took us on a tour of the solar system visiting each of the planets and helping the children to develop an understanding how each planet differs to the next. There were lots of excited and amazed “wows” that came from the children as they floated through space and the Reception teachers were so impressed with all the facts and information that they could remember afterwards. Well done, Reception!
