Before half term, the children were thrilled to receive a special delivery—live caterpillars! Over the following days, they eagerly observed as the caterpillars grew bigger and eventually formed their chrysalides. Over the half term break, the butterflies emerged from their chrysalides. When we returned to school, the children were delighted to find them fluttering in their enclosure. On Monday, we gently released the butterflies into the playground. Some lingered on orange slices, allowing the children a close-up look at their delicate wings and beautiful patterns.
This magical experience sparked a sense of wonder and curiosity, with the children eagerly describing what they saw using rich, descriptive language. It was a perfect springboard into our new theme, Imagine!
This week, our key text was Stanley’s Stick. Inspired by the story, we ventured into our woodland area to collect our own special sticks. But these weren’t just ordinary sticks—they were magical, imaginative, and full of possibilities! Each child carefully selected a stick and then transformed it through decoration, creativity, and storytelling. Some became magic wands, others were fishing rods, dragon tails, swords, or even televisions!
In maths, we’ve been learning about odd and even numbers! To help us understand this tricky concept, we broke it down into simple steps. We discovered that if a number can be split into two equal groups, it’s even — and if it can’t, then it’s odd. For example, we had 4 cubes, we split them into two equal groups of 2, so 4 is an even number! Then we looked at 5 cubes. When we tried to split them into two equal groups, there was one left over — so 5 is an odd number!
