Today was Science Day and we had the most amazing time experimenting! Throughout the day, we completed five exciting experiments.
Experiment 1: Dunking the Gingerbread Man
We started by exploring how long it takes for a gingerbread man biscuit to break when dunked in water. Each group tested something different, and we discovered that the highest number of dunks before breaking was 36! We also observed that it took about 5 seconds for the biscuit to sink and 13 seconds for it to completely break apart.
Experiment 2: The CurlyWurly Stretch
Next, we paired up to see who could stretch a CurlyWurly the longest without breaking it. We had some very long CurlyWurly’s by the end of the session and we showed great teamwork!
Experiment 3: Butterfly Life Cycle
Earlier this week, we received a very special delivery – real life caterpillars! We’re going to watch them transform into beautiful butterflies over the coming weeks. So, for our next activity, we completed a diagram of the butterfly life cycle and learned all about each stage of metamorphosis.
Experiment 4: Colour Mixing Magic
We explored colour mixing using paper towels and dyed water. We watched as colours travelled through the paper towels and blended together – red and blue made purple, yellow and blue made green, and red and yellow made orange. We also had fun mixing coloured paints with our fingertips to create even more colours.
Experiment 5: Sink or Float?
We tested a variety of classroom objects to see whether they would sink or float in water. The most interesting object was a rubber band! It floated at first, but after a little while, it sank to the bottom of the box!
Bonus Fun: Coke and Mentos Explosion
To finish the day with a bang, we created a mini explosion using Coke and Mentos. It was messy and SO much fun – everyone loved it!
