Reception have made a wonderful start to the new term. The children have really enjoyed beginning our new theme, ‘Food, Glorious Food!’
Our focus text this week was Oliver’s Vegetables by Vivian French. The Reception children have been busy all week engaging in activities all about our key text and vegetables. The activities included observational drawings of vegetables, sequencing the events of the story and discussing the foods that Oliver tasted and developing our hand-eye co-ordination and fine motor skills by hammering nails into vegetables.
At the end of the week, just like Oliver in our story, the children sampled a variety of vegetables including rhubarb, spinach and aubergine, amongst others. The Reception children talked about the taste of each of the vegetables and expressed their preferences. The children worked on extending their sentences by giving reasons for their opinions. The children discussed their favourite vegetables and after a vote, cabbage came out on top!
We also unveiled our new role play areas for the half term. Ruby Class proudly opened up ‘Rosie’s Cafe’ while Red Class opened their very own pizzeria. The children had great fun using their imaginations to create different foods and meals in their restaurants. In addition to this, the children also enjoyed putting their role play skills to work in our new ‘Camp Out’ role play in our Early Years Central Area.
We are looking forward to exploring and tasting lots of different foods over the coming weeks. Well done, Reception.
