Nursery arrived on Monday to find a basket of exotic-looking fruit. They discovered that the fruit came from Africa, and belonged to Handa from our story, ‘Handa’s Surprise’. We set about investigating the fruit by trying each one and describing the tastes and textures.
We did a wonderful job of retelling the story with costumes, masks and puppets.
We enjoyed drawing, weaving and making things from Africa and our story.
We shared our own experiences of Africa. We talked about African patterned fabric and designed some costumes. We investigated some African instruments, and enjoyed playing them in time to music from different parts of Africa. We even learnt an African song from Ghana!
We tried out some of the traditional skills from the story. We found that carrying a basket on your head is not so easy, however we did an excellent job of travelling with a beanbag on our heads instead! We enjoyed dressing and wrapping our class babies on our backs.
On Wednesday we marked the beginning of spring with a wonderful gardening workshop with our environmental teacher, Ms Ioannou. We went on a hunt to see lots of signs of spring: including flowers and even new life on the pond! We learnt how to put on our gardening gloves and planted our own strawberry plants to take home.
This week we also had an exciting shopping trip to Marks and Spencer! We talked about all the wonderful food we could see in the shop, and then we all had the chance to buy something to share back in school. We had lots to talk about when we came back to school and our snack time was particularly delicious!
