As part of their ‘Switched on Science’ learning Pearl Class have been exploring materials. We found a treasure map in a bottle and talked about the directions that were indicated on the map.
It led us to the treehouse – where we found all sorts of exciting, buried treasure! We discussed pearls, gemstones and different types of metals – such as copper, gold and silver.
We used metal detectors to find buried metal objects and used magnets to discover if they were magnetic. We discovered that most of the metal treasure was magnetic, but not all.
When we returned to our classroom we were inspired to make our own maps. We stained the maps with tea to make them look old like the one we found.
Our key text this week has been ‘The Rainbow Fish’. As well as talking about sharing, we made some spectacular Rainbow fishes from collage, paint and playdough.
In our maths lessons we practised ‘taking one away’ – as Rainbow fish shared his scales with his friend one at a time.
