Nursery have been investigating mud as part of their ‘Switched on Science’ learning. We started by singing a song about mud. We then shared our thoughts on what mud is made of. We used the internet to answer some of our questions. We found some interesting facts about why hippos and pigs like to roll in mud and how useful it is.
We made some predictions about which material would make the best castle and we took a vote. We tested dry sand, wet sand and mud. We found that sand was best, but mud was second best.
During our independent learning we chose to add other materials to soil and talked about the results. We added things we found around our classroom such salt, sand, shaving foam, glue and glitter.
We talked about the new textures we created. We then had a go at using our mud mixtures as paint, and speculated what might happen when our painting dried. It gave us lots of inspiration for our mud kitchen outside, and a lot of muddy fun was had by all!
