Nursery started their topic ‘A taste of the world’. They arrived to find some exotic fruit in their class! They discovered that it belonged to Handa from our key text: ‘Handa’s Surprise’. We investigated the fruit by using our senses. We described the texture and smell of the fruit, and later in the week we described the different tastes.
After the tasting session we made marks to represent our favourites. We also helped Handa by making shopping lists for the fruit that the animals took away.
We took part in a Handa’s Surprise dance lesson in the hall, and acted out the story with masks and props. We talked about some of the African countries that our families come from and enjoyed listening to music from different parts of Africa.
We tried out some African-style weaving, and did observational drawing and painting of Handa’s fruit. We also made fruit collage portraits inspired by the Italian artist Giuseppe Arcimboldo.
