Caritas In Action
On Friday, Year 6 examined what it meant to live in an equal and fair society. They focused primarily on children’s rights and discussed whether or not it was possible to create such a society – what does it look like? What is preventing it from happening?
To narrow the scope of the essay, the children looked at only a few children’s rights: the right to food, water, shelter, education and love. They felt these were the essentials for a ‘happy’ childhood.
After a lengthy discussion which included looking at why these rights do not exist for every child, we then moved onto looking for solutions to these enormous problems. The wonderful thing about teaching children is that literally nothing is impossible. They approached the problem with open-mindedness and optimism – something that we as adults sometimes lack.
What came out of the day was a collection of essays highlighting where things are going wrong in our society, but with a variety of solutions to get us back on track. The day really showed how socially aware our young students are, and if this is the future of our world then the future looks very bright.
