Year 1 has had a great first week back! We have had a great Science week and have been learning all about Mars and have embarked on a mission from NASA to find out facts about Mars. First we had to research all about the planet. We learnt that it is the fourth planet from the sun, that the ground has iron on the surface that makes it appear a red colour. We also learnt that Mars has similar features to Earth. It has seasons, different types of weather and has mountains and volcanoes just like we do. We also learnt about the two rovers roaming around on the planet taking pictures! Have a look at some of our posters here:

Rhys, Maxi and Edmund even had a go at buildering Perseverance themselves!
We also completed a great science experiment this week. NASA asked Year 1 if they could make some rocket fuel to fuel a rocket into Space. We used fizzy vitamin tables and water to explore if there would be a chemical reaction. Year 1 noticed that there was a bigger reaction when we added warm water to the fizzy tablets.
Today we had a go at launching our rockets. It is so exciting but possibly a little bit nerve-racking as the rocket fuel was so strong it exploded a few times but we were lucky enough to get a blast off! We will be uploading videos of it to Tapestry!
We finished off our Science week with a lovely art lesson where we painted Mars using water colours. This was really effective and really helped to show the dusty surface of Mars. Check out our art work here:

We hope NASA will be proud of all our research this week. Have a lovely weekend!
