Our focus text in Reception this week was, “The Incredible Hotel” by Kate Davies. The book is all about The Incredible Hotel where everything runs like clockwork, thanks to Stefan the kitchen porter. When a fire starts at the hotel ahead of the Duchess’ arrival for the Grand Ball, it’s Stefan who saves the day by creating the most incredible dessert.
As such, it was fitting that our Literacy focus activities this week related to delicious cakes and sweet treats. The children used play dough to make their own cakes and used different materials to decorate them, they independently designed their own incredible desserts and even sold some of the tasty treats that they made in our class café.
The children also followed instructions to make cucumber sandwiches for The Great Ball. Reception were able to use their fine motor skills to spread the butter on the bread, slice the cucumber and assemble their sandwiches. Everyone enjoyed tasting all of their hard work.
Over the week, we discussed the Royal Family and the children enjoyed learning about King Charles. We looked at photos of him over time and discussed his role. The children enjoyed exploring photos of Buckingham Palace and talking about what they could see. Some children decided to make crowns of their own inspired by King Charles’ coronation crown.
Yet another INCREDIBLE week in Reception. Well done everyone!
