It’s been another fantastic week of learning at home and at school for our Reception children! In Phonics, we have been learning some of our final Phase 2 sounds, as well as some new tricky words, ‘he’ and ‘she.’ The children were introduced to the l sound (having a go at labelling body parts like ‘leg’ and ‘lap), the ss sound (slithering like snakes on the floor!) and the concept of alien words- having fun making up a few of their own!
In Maths, we have been exploring the numbers 6, 7 and 8, and finding different ways to make them. We found different combinations of 6 spots on a 6-legged ladybird, made some beautiful rainbows using 7 colours, and filled a toybox with 8 toys- only to find that some naughty mice kept stealing some of them, just like in our ‘Kipper’s Toybox’ story! This helped us to hone our Maths thinking by practicing making 8 with abstract, hidden quantities- e.g. if I have 8 toys, but only 5 of them are in my box, how many must be missing?
During our Physical Development learning, we have played lots more super-fun object control games, such as throwing & catching balloons, and steering or pushing balls around our own home-made obstacle courses. The children have shown us some fantastic hand-eye coordination and engaged in lots of wonderful exercise to keep their minds and bodies healthy!
Our afternoon learning has also centered on wellbeing, to mark this week being Children’s Mental Health Week. On Monday, we explored this year’s ‘Express Yourself’ theme, and channelled our creativity through some wonderful paintings, drawings, cooking, construction and exercise routines- the choice was ours! On Wednesday, we enjoyed a whole-school ‘Screen Free Day’, full of family fun such as baking, bedsheet forts and trips to the park; before finally spending some time yesterday afternoon thinking about how to keep ourselves safe online with the help of ‘DigiDuck.’
We are very proud of what has been another fantastic week of learning from our Reception children, and look forward to sharing lots more of our learning from both home and school with you next week. Have a wonderful weekend!
