‘Don’t Freak Out, Just Speak Out’ is the new speak out challenge taking place at St Joseph’s School running for Year’s 2 to 5.
The challenge aims to give your child the opportunity to develop their oracy, performance and presentation skills. They will be speaking out in class, focussing on overcoming any fears and anxieties they may have, whilst delivering a speech in a clear and articulate way.
Speaking clearly and articulately is a vital skill that children will need to develop in order to thrive in their lives and we want to help your child to develop those skills!
The first round of the challenge will take place as a class debate and children will be given a debate topic in advance for them to consider. The idea of this round is to give children a chance to engage with a wide range of topical issues and practice speaking out in front of their class mates.
The second round will take place in classes from week beginning 2nd of May. In this round your child will be encouraged to create a 2-minute speech for them to perform in front of their class mates. Children will be able to choose a speech of their choice. This could be a speech written about a current affairs issue, a monologue from a play, a made-up story or a re-cap of some interesting information that they have learnt. We encourage as many children as possible to partake in this round!
Children in the class will then vote for a selection of their class mates to proceed to the third round which will take place in the hall on the evening of the 25th of May.
We want children to see this speak out challenge as an exciting opportunity, one that will help them to improve their speaking and confidence skills.
We hope that you will encourage your child to get involved in this scheme.
