This week, Year 5 did an science experiment to find out whether different materials separate when in water. We used different solids and liquids to help us find out different results. These included salt, sugar, sand, vegetable oil, balsamic vinegar and rice. We used water as our liquid to put our solids in. We also made coffee and some people tasted it. The salt dissolved in the water, so that means it is soluble and it did not take a long time. The sand did not dissolve in water so that means it is insoluble. We thought this might be because sand is made from rock, which is a hard material. The vegetable oil did not dissolve, but it mixed in with the water if you stirred it, but when left alone, it made a layer of oil on top of the water. The rice did not dissolve but it just sunk to the bottom of the container. The balsamic vinegar did not dissolve and as the vegetable oil it just mixed in with the water and created a layer. We learned that if something dissolves it is soluble and if something doesn’t dissolve it is insoluble. We all enjoyed it and everybody wishes they could do it again.
