Busy bees in Reception

It has been another wonderful week in Reception as we have settled into being back together again at school!

In Phonics, we have continued learning new Phase 3 sounds, with the children being introduced to y, z and the zz digraph. We buzzed around the room, hopping from ‘flower’ to ‘flower’ just like a real bee would, wrote ‘zap’ in superhero costumes, and made some fantastic zebras and bees shaped like the letter z! We also really enjoyed using our sounds to make our own maps to retell Julia Donaldson’s ‘What the Ladybird Heard’, imagining our own animals that the robbers might be trying to steal instead of the ‘prize cow’- unicorns and dolphins being a few favourites!

In Maths, we have looked at the numbers 9 and 10, and how they can be represented and composed in different ways. We have revisited the tens frames we learned about during the online learning period, noticing that if the tens frame is full, there must always be ten items inside, and that if there is one gap, there will be nine items inside.

In Understanding the World, we have been learning about how plants grow. We examined real flowers, identifying the stem, flower, leaves and roots, and talked about what each part was for, before drawing and labelling our own plants. Some of us wondered why the roses we saw had thorns- with some children doing a great job of realising that they might help to protect the plant!

We have also continued learning about Easter in RE, talking about the story behind Good Friday, Jesus being arrested by the Romans, and how he might have felt at this time. We agreed that this was quite a sad story, and wondered why the Romans didn’t like Jesus- some of us thought that they might have been jealous of all the amazing things he could do!
