This week in Reception, we have done a fantastic job of learning some more super sounds, including the digraphs ow (an alternate grapheme for the ou phoneme we have already learned) and oi. We have read some wonderful books such as ‘Owl Babies’ and ‘Oi Frog’ to help us see how some of our favourite authors have used these sounds in their writing, and even had a go at coming up with our own rhymes in the style of the famous ‘Oi Frog, sit on a log’, such as, ‘Oi Cat, sit on a mat!’
In Maths, we have had lots of fun learning how to share items equally between different groups of people and toys. We have learned that we should share the items slowly and carefully, counting them out one by one and saying, ‘One for you, one for me’ to make sure we don’t make any mistakes along the way! We should also count them at the end to make sure that everybody has the same amount and that it is definitely fair. We really enjoyed reading ‘The Doorbell Rang’, where more and more people kept arriving at a house, meaning we had to re-share the same amount of cookies every time!
On Wednesday afternoon, we enjoyed a very special visit from one of our environmental teachers, Miss Sarah, who taught us how to plant sunflower seeds in compost. She explained why this would be so good for our flowers, and how compost can be made at school by saving the skins and cores from our snacktime fruit! We have taken our sunflower plants home, where they will grow beautiful and tall with plenty of sunshine, water and air. On the theme of nature, we have also been enjoying watching our class caterpillars and how they have grown- we are all looking forward to seeing them become butterflies!
On Thursday and Friday this week, we have been having lots of fun making special Father’s Day cards to give to our daddies, uncles, grandads or other important men in our lives this weekend- a little surprise to find in your child’s bookbag today!
We hope you all have a wonderful, restful weekend, and look forward to welcoming all of your children back on Monday for another wonderful week of learning.
