This week in Reception, we have begun introducing the children to Phase 2 Phonics, with our activities focusing on the letter ‘s’ and the ‘sss’ sound it makes at the start of words like ‘snake’ and ‘stick.’ We tried to find as many things starting with the ‘s’ sound as we could hidden in a tray of lentils, and had a go at writing the letter ‘s’ in the sky and in as many places as we could around our classroom! We will be doing some more learning on ‘s’ at the start of next week before moving on to learning some other new sounds.
Our Maths learning has focused on 2D shapes, particularly squares, rectangles, circles and triangles. We have talked about the similarities and differences between these shapes- particularly how many sides and corners they have, and how long these are. We have had great fun thinking about some of the different ways we can use our shapes to make art, and which shapes we can see in pictures we look at- e.g. a triangle roof and square house. Today, we learned about Kadinsky, a painter from Russia who liked to use lots of shapes in his art. We had a go at making some paintings of our own in the style of his ‘Concentric Circles’ work- some of us had the idea of changing the circles to triangles or squares!
We marked Remembrance Day by making our own poppies and medals, exploring different ways of doing this. Some of us decided to collage poppies with tissue paper and buttons, while others of us even tried out finger-painting to make a whole field of poppies. Our learning was special and unique just like the soldiers we were remembering. While taking part in our 2 minute silence we thought about why the soldiers were so special, and talked about some of our ideas and questions about them at the end.
