The children arrived on Monday to find a basket of very exotic-looking fruit. They discovered that the fruit came from Africa, and belonged to Handa from our story, ‘Handa’s Surprise’. We investigated the fruit by trying each one and describing the tastes and textures.
In maths we made marks and tallies to represent our favourite fruits or African animals – and some of us even had a go at writing the numerals.
We learnt about the continent Africa, and several of the children talked about their own African cultural heritage. How exciting it was to have the children share photos and outfits from countries such as Ghana, Ethiopia, Eritrea and Egypt!
We enjoyed drawing and making things from Africa and our story. We talked about African patterned fabric and designed some costumes. We made African necklaces and created African map pictures using watercolour paints.
We acting out the story with masks and props. We learnt an African song (Kye, Kye, Kule) and tried out some African traditions inspired by our story.
We found that carrying a basket on your head is not so easy, however we did an excellent job of travelling with a beanbag on our heads instead! Great learning, Pearl Class!
