This week in Reception we have enjoyed another week of festive fun and cheer- with plenty of amazing learning in between!
In Phonics, we have taught the new sounds m and d, as well as some fun ways of remembering them- the children drew their favourite foods on paper plates to remember ‘m’ and played our drums to remember ‘d’, just like our Jolly Phonics actions! We also made some lovely cards ‘to mum’, ‘to dad’, and ‘to nan’, so that we could practice our amazing new sounds at the same time as the tricky word ‘to!’
In Maths, we have learned about 2D shapes, with a specific focus on the differences between squares and rectangles. We talked about how they both have 4 sides, but on a square all the sides are the same, whereas rectangles have 2 long sides and 2 short sides. We went on a ‘shape hunt’ around our indoor and outdoor learning areas to find as many things shaped like circles, squares, triangles and rectangles as we could!
In RE, we have continued our learning around Advent by focusing on advent wreaths. We looked at our school’s advent wreath and counted 5 candles on it- one for each week of December before Christmas, then one more for Christmas Day. We wondered why the candle for Christmas Day was white “like angels” and why it was in the middle of the wreath- lots of us realised that this showed it was the most special candle.
Today, we have all enjoyed a very special Living Nativity from the team at Ark Farm, who brought many wonderful animals to see us including a donkey, sheep, chickens, ducks, goats and a very friendly Labrador! We had a lovely time meeting the animals, stroking them and learning interesting facts about them, such as the fact that sheep have ‘wool’- not fur!
We hope you all have a lovely weekend and look forward to welcoming the children back for the final week of term on Monday.
