This week Year 5 had a chance to explore a Mayan cave!
The children have been learning about the different Mayan gods, Mayan rituals and Mayan festivals. They discovered that the Mayan priests would communicate to the gods in caves surrounding a fire and broken pottery pieces. We also discovered that the Mayan priests would sacrifice Mayan people to the gods through a variety of blood rituals… The children examined a number of Mayan paintings and artefacts in the cave and discussed what they thought the meaning behind them were. We also spoke about the Mayan creation story, otherwise known as the Popol Vuh.
In their Science lesson the children conducted an investigation to discover whether a variety of products were soluble or insoluble. The children tried to dissolve the products in water and discussed whether the various products had dissolved or not. They then conducted a further investigation, choosing an independent variable to measure. The children have been learning about the difference between an independent, dependent and controlled variable. They worked together in order to predict an outcome, lead an investigation and then record their results.
